How to Check True Drag Factor on Your PM5 Monitor

Never trust the damper lever number alone. Two Concept2 ergs in the same gym can produce completely different drag factors at damper 4. Always verify on the monitor before beginning your session:

  1. 1
    Press Main Menu

Power on the PM5 monitor or press Menu to return to the home screen.

  2. 2
Select "More Options" → "Display Drag Factor"

The monitor screen will display a large zero and wait for flywheel rotation.

  3. 3
    Take 4 – 5 Full Firm Strokes

Row with your natural drive speed. The monitor will calculate the precise rate of flywheel deceleration and display your true drag factor number.

  4. 4
Adjust the Damper Lever until Target is Reached

Move the lever up or down until the PM5 displays your target (e.g. 130 for Heavyweight Men, 120 for Lightweight Men).

Competitive Drag Factor Guidelines (World Rowing Standards)

Elite rowers and Olympic champions do NOT row on damper 10. National federations (USRowing, British Rowing, Rowing Australia) mandate strict drag factor ceilings for official 2k ergometer testing:

Athlete CategoryTarget Drag FactorTypical Damper (Sea Level)Water Equivalent
Heavyweight Men (>75kg / 165lbs)125 – 135 DF4.0 – 4.7Eight (8+) / Quad (4x)
Lightweight Men (<75kg / 165lbs)120 – 130 DF3.6 – 4.4Four (4-) / Double (2x)
Heavyweight Women (>61.5kg / 135lbs)115 – 125 DF3.2 – 4.0Eight (8+) / Four (4-)

The Physics of Concept2 Flywheel Damping

Many fitness enthusiasts mistake the damper lever for a weight stack on a leg press machine, assuming that setting the damper to 10 provides a "better" or "harder" workout. In reality, the damper functions like bicycle gearing or the hull shape of a boat.

Why Damper 10 Increases Injury Risk

At damper 10, the louvers are wide open, maximizing airflow into the flywheel housing. As soon as you stop pulling at the finish, the wheel decelerates abruptly. At the catch, the flywheel is moving very slowly, forcing your lumbar spine, intercostal muscles, and lower back to absorb maximum initial torque before momentum begins.

How the PM5 Measures Power Independently of Damper

The Concept2 Performance Monitor does NOT assume a fixed resistance. On every single recovery phase, the monitor samples flywheel deceleration over time (k = Δω / Δt) to calculate the exact drag factor. Whether your damper is at 3 or 10, pulling at 250 Watts requires the exact same physiological power output.
