Concept2 Race Pace Predictor
Enter a single benchmark performance to project your race split, Watts, and optimal stroke rate from 500m sprints to marathon ergs using Paul's Law.
Projected Target Paces Across Distances
Projected using Paul's Law exponent 1.060. Pacing assumes even splits and proper race execution.

The Science of Paul's Law in Indoor Rowing
Paul's Law was formulated by British rowing coach Paul Smith after analyzing thousands of Concept2 ergometer scores. It expresses the physiological relationship between distance and sustainable velocity in trained rowers:
In practical terms, for every doubling of distance (e.g. 1k to 2k, or 5k to 10k), a balanced athlete’s average 500m split will increase by approximately 5.0 seconds.
Interpreting Model Discrepancies as a Training Heuristic
Comparing your recorded benchmark splits across distances against Riegel’s projected curve provides a non-diagnostic heuristic for training tendencies:
- Endurance Discrepancy: If your real-world 5k or 10k pace is noticeably slower than predicted relative to your 2k score, your current conditioning may reflect an anaerobic bias. Increasing low-intensity aerobic base volume (Zone 2) can help align sustained endurance with peak power.
- Sprint Discrepancy: If your 500m sprint pace is barely faster than your 2k pace, your limiting factor is likely neuromuscular acceleration and peak force rather than aerobic endurance. Targeted power-stroke work and high-rate sprints can help raise your ceiling.
Note: Power-law formulas serve as mathematical benchmarks rather than clinical physiological diagnostics. Real-world performance depends on individual muscle fiber composition, technical efficiency, and recovery.
