The Bridge Between Large Language Models and Your Indoor Rower
When rowers ask generic conversational AI models for training advice, the models usually give generic answers. An AI model does not inherently know whether you rowed a hard 10,000-meter threshold piece yesterday, whether your 2,000-meter baseline pace is 1:42 or 2:15 per 500 meters, or whether your weekly volume has spiked to dangerous levels.
In the past, solving this required tedious manual friction: opening your Concept2 Online Logbook, copying past split times and stroke rates, pasting them into a chat prompt, and hoping the AI calculates your fatigue correctly.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) changes that dynamic entirely. Created as an open standard, MCP provides a unified, secure protocol that lets desktop applications—such as Claude Desktop, Cursor IDE, Zed, or custom AI agents—communicate directly with live tools and services. By connecting MyNextRow to your MCP client, your AI assistant gains immediate, structured awareness of your rowing history and training load.
What MyNextRow's MCP Integration Can Do
MyNextRow's MCP server provides your AI assistant with a comprehensive suite of eight specialized coaching and diagnostic tools, structured into two functional tiers:
1. Diagnostic and Read Tools (Always 0 Credits / Free)
These tools let your AI examine your rowing telemetry and connection health without consuming any coaching credits:
get_athlete_profile: Retrieves your primary rowing goal, onboarding status, and estimated 2k reference pace.get_training_load: Calculates your Chronic Training Load (fitness), Acute Training Load (fatigue), Training Stress Balance (form), and Acute-to-Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR injury risk).get_recent_workouts: Pulls recent completed workouts from your Concept2 Logbook, including distance, split, stroke rate, watts, and heart rate.get_technique_and_streak: Retrieves your active rowing consistency streak and technique score.concept2_connection_status: Verifies whether your Concept2 Logbook account is linked and authenticated.get_credit_balance: Checks your remaining daily coaching credits and wallet balance.validate_workout: Validates whether a proposed interval workout satisfies Concept2 machine constraints and safe physiological boundaries.
2. Prescriptive Generative Tools (1 Credit per Request)
When you ask your AI assistant to generate a tailored workout or provide deep coaching consultation, it calls our prescriptive generative tools:
ask_coach: Consults MyNextRow's AI coaching model with your full training load context, generating tailored rowing advice and answering technical questions.generate_workout: Creates a structured, adaptive Concept2 interval workout (with warm-up, main work blocks, stroke rates, and target pace clamps), saves it directly into your MyNextRow workout library, and automatically publishes a direct ErgData PM5 deep link for instant monitor programming.
The Unified Credit Economy: Free Ad Credits & Subscriptions
To keep MyNextRow accessible to all indoor rowers while covering upstream AI inference costs, our MCP tools operate on the exact same credit system as our web application:
- Inspection is always free: You can check your training load, review past workouts, and verify connection health as many times as you like without spending credits.
- Generative workouts consume 1 credit: When you instruct Claude or Cursor to generate a structured workout, 1 credit is deducted from your wallet.
- Earning free credits: If your credit balance reaches zero, the MCP tool returns a friendly notice with a direct link to our web Credits Hub. Free tier athletes can earn credits by watching a short rewarded video ad at
/credits. - Subscription refills: Rowers subscribed to Starter or Pro tiers receive automatic daily credit refills.
- Automatic refund protection: If an upstream model error or network issue prevents a workout from being successfully generated and saved to your library, your credit is automatically refunded in full.
Built-In Safety Governors & Injury Prevention
Unlike raw AI prompts that might suggest extreme or dangerous workouts, MyNextRow's MCP server enforces strict physiological safety governors on every generated response:
- Rib Stress Fracture Prevention (ACWR >= 1.50): If your Acute-to-Chronic Workload Ratio indicates a rapid, spike in training volume, the MCP server automatically warns your AI client and restricts high-intensity recommendations.
- Severe Fatigue Protection (TSB < -30): When your Training Stress Balance flags severe accumulated fatigue, prescriptive tools prioritize active recovery and low-rate steady state.
- Physiological Bounding: All generated intervals are strictly clamped to realistic stroke rates (maximum 45 strokes per minute), bounded paces based on your authenticated 2k capability, and a three-hour single-session limit.
Privacy & Data Boundaries
MyNextRow operates under a zero-health-PII privacy philosophy for external AI integrations. When an MCP client queries your profile, sensitive biometric attributes—such as raw body weight, age, and biological sex—are deliberately stripped from the payload before transmission. Your Concept2 OAuth authentication tokens are never exposed over the protocol.
API keys used to authenticate MCP clients are generated with 256 bits of cryptographic entropy and stored in our database strictly as one-way SHA-256 digests. For detailed information on our data protection, storage practices, and your privacy rights, please refer directly to the official MyNextRow Privacy Policy.
Key points
- MCP connects AI clients directly to your Concept2 rowing data and MyNextRow coaching engine.
- Diagnostic tools like training load, workout summaries, and connection health cost zero credits.
- Prescriptive tools like personalized interval generation consume 1 credit with automatic refund protection.
- Sensitive athlete biometrics like weight, age, and sex are withheld from external AI models.
- All coaching outputs enforce strict physiological safety bounds and rib stress fracture warnings.
Editorial & Coaching Standards
Guides in the MyNextRow Learn library are created by Concept2 athletes and coaches, synthesizing peer-reviewed sports physiology, biomechanics literature, and authoritative rowing guidelines. Every workout protocol and technical cue is tested for safety, repeatability, and PM5 monitor compatibility.
